![]() The Story of Easter Island is a wake up call for all of us. Easter Island, home of the world famous statues, is barren, wind- swept grassland today. It was not always so. Once Easter Island was a lush sub- tropical paradise, but a lack of respect for its limited resources led to disaster. Easter Island was once home to a lush forest of palm trees, shrubs, ferns, herbs, grasses and flowers. Its society was highly organized, motivated and hard-working. Early European visitors were stunned by the level of sophistication required to produce the statues. Yet by the time outsiders arrived, the rich ecosystem and most of the people who had lived in it were gone. |
